Marilyn Monroe Charlie Chaplin Clark Gable Boris Karloff Lucille Ball Joan Crawford Walter Brennan Billie Burke Desi Arnaz Vivian Vance Toots Shor Signed Autographed LP
The album "Academy Award Hits" by Pierre La Blanc and his Orchestra. It has been signed in pencil on the front cover by Clark Gable, Vivian Vance and Boris Karloff, on the back cover in pencil by Marilyn Monroe and Joan Crawford. It has been signed in ballpoint or biro pen on the front cover by Walter Brennan, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz and Toots Shor, and on the back cover in pen by Charlie Chaplin and Billie Burke. The signatures were obtained by Cicely Steinberg, who grew up on Broadway from the early 1950's onward. Cicely would obtain records from the local Colony Records store on Broadway. The owner would allow her to take them from the recycle bin, destined to be shipped back to the manufacturers, if she would obtain some autographs for him also. She would frequent the theater district and nearby hotels, collecting the signatures of whatever celebrities she would meet. She would also occasionally travel to obtain the autographs. This album was released in about 1958 on the short-lived Mercury Wing label. The album shows signs of wear, but is in remarkably good shape for it's age. There is some seam splitting on the top. The vinyl is in very good shape, very little scratching evident. There is no paper inner sleeve. Some of the pencil signatures ar a bit hard to see, particularly in these scans, which is often the case. I will be happy to send additional scans of the signatures. Clark Gable's signature is over the chair arm to the left, coming down across the dark area of the chair back. Boris Karloff is below the word "orchestra". Joan Crawford signed her last name "Crawford Steele". From 1955-59 she was married to Alfred Steele. A rare full Lucille Ball signature. It may seem somewhat inongrous to have such a low-budet item signed by such high-budget stars, but this is all Cicely and her fellow early collectors could afford to get their hands on. An amazing collection of Hollywood legends.
